Scout camp celebrates 100 years

From the The Bolton News, first published Tuesday 22nd May 2007.

A CENTURY of scouting will be celebrated by 650 young people camping out in Bolton this weekend.

The Scouts, Cubs and Beavers will set up temporary home under canvas at Bibby's Farm, Anglezarke, for a weekend of fun including kayaking, archery and go-karting. With the help of 230 leaders, the boys and girls, aged from six to 25, will also carry out environmental projects such as shrub planting and recycling.

On Sunday, they will be visited by the mayors of Bolton, Bury, Rochdale and Oldham.

At the same time as the Bolton event, there are 150 camps taking place around the country with an estimated 200,000 Scouts taking part, making it the largest simultaneous camp held by the Scout Association.

"We've been planning this Centenary Camp for ages," said Catherine Burke, aged 14, from the 24th Bolton Scout Group.

"Everyone is really looking forward to it and it's going to be a brilliant way to celebrate 100 years of scouting."
